Why do people think its wrong to eat dogs?

i understand its a difference in culture. the majority of asians do not eat dogs or cats but i know people who would tease an asian for being a "dog eater" or a "barbarian" just because they were asian(and im not just talking about like little kids teasing). i dont see why it would be any different that eating a chicken or cow. i know people of different cultures can eat some weird things but why cant some people respect that?
